I’m a softie
November 22, 2008 at 11:53 am (Basil, Random)
It’s not a secret that the love of my life is little Basil. And that one of the things that make him adorable (for those of you who know him) is his referee/tuxedo outfit of black and white colors.
Well, the tuxedo love does not end there. This kind of thing, which I only just discovered today, always brings tears to my eyes. (Watch the whole thing, it’s so cute when they waddle) They just are too cute!

On Saturday I went to dinner with my friend the Teacher and her husband, who drove in from NY and called. As we were sitting there, the topic of their new car came up. They recently inherited a BMW from her mom and were enjoying not being pedestrians anymore. Of course, we got to talking about German cars and my love for the fantabulous red VW.
The following dialogue ensued:
Teacher’s husband: A VW Jetta? That’s such a liberal car.
Silence… Teacher looks a little uncomfortable. Did her husband just insult me?
Me: What do you mean “liberal car”?
Teacher’s husband: That. It’s a liberal car. People with liberal views tend to buy cars like the VW, Volvo, etc. Conservatives buy Mercedes, etc. You’re not offended, right?
I wasn’t. So my red car shows my political views. Liberal car? Damn right!
It was the best compliment I’d gotten that week.
Countdown
November 17, 2008 at 12:32 am (Family, Mexico my love)
To two things, really.
1: 3 days until I can put my savings into buying an iPhone. With that I will get rid of my faithful (yet old) cellphone and put an end to getting lost in the Virginia/Maryland highways. I will master the GPS like there’s no tomorrow.
2: Exactly 33 days separate me from my darling Mexico. Yes, it cost me a TON of miles (ggrrr American Airlines!), but going to México means that I will get to:
- hug my brother and dad, who I haven’t seen in almost 6 and 4 years, respectively
- eat my nanny’s food
- go on walks through downtown DF with said father and brother
- go to Puebla with dad and brother and visit super smart uncle and visit favorite Talavera store (where I will fight urge to buy things I can’t bring back because they are fragile)
- see my niece and my favorite cousins and aunt
- advance in the soul searching process I’ve been doing (more on that later, it has to do with my job futures)
- immerse myself in all the love and mexicanness that my family exudes. I need it. Badly.
I love you because…

… you are red (my favorite color)
… you are German
… you look cool and elegant, without being preppy
… you are smart (see below for details):
… you have a small gadget in the back that allows me to hang shopping bags from it, thus avoiding the danger of having the contents slip in the trunk
… you have the Gorilla Gear. You know, those little rectangles that Velcro themselves to the trunk lining, so I can create restrictions around stuff (boxes don’t move, bags don’t slip, etc)
… you tell me when it’s time to call the service by flashing a little wrench on the screen (so cute!)
… you have sensors in the tires that tell me when they’re low on air and I need to fill them up
… you beep if it’s too cold inside, and a little frost image shows up on the dashboard. Time to turn on the heater!
… you have a feature that allows me to tap on the blinker, without needing to turn it on all the way. Three blinks and I’ve changed lanes…
… you have an extra AC/Heater vent on top of the dashboard, so the air can flow without hitting my eyes
… your glove compartment can be used as a cooler (hello insulin users, you are good to go!)
… your floor mats are soo sweet. All modern and race-car looking. Yeah!
… you have an iPod adaptor
… you are energy efficient
… your engine roars so nicely (yet I drive within speed limit and take care of you. No burning of clutches here)
… you have given me independence and the feeling of being a responsible adult.
Yes. You truly are amazing. In a world where cars are geared towards the need of the user (DVD players, gigantic cup holders, cough, cough), you are a car with smart details that make life easier for a girl like me. Plus, Basil likes looking out the windows when we go for rides. Can’t beat how cute that looks from the inside (and I bet it looks even cuter from the outside).
Here’s to more fun times together!
