Happy Birthday, my son

6 years ago, Oct. 9th was a Wednesday. My grad classes were canceled for the afternoon and I found myself at home at 12pm. With all my reading and grading done (a miracle!) I wondered what I was going to do with myself and why it was that I suddenly I had a clear, free afternoon.

I called the shelter to see about the status of my application, but with no luck. Then sometime after 2, I got through.

Me:“Hi, this is NSLW, I’m calling about the 2-year old terrier I signed up for”

Super nice shelter girl: Oh yes! We were going to call you. The other people in the wait list couldn’t take him, so he is yours. He had his surgery (i.e. he was castrated) today, but you can pick him up at 4!

Suddenly, my afternoon was full. I was not prepared (after two applications that had not worked, I didn’t have high hopes I would get a dog at all), and had nothing. Up to Petsmart I went and got everything I needed.

At 4pm, I was at the shelter and a somewhat sore (surgery hurts!), shy dog came to meet me. He was a bit distant the first couple of days (I guess he wanted to make sure I was a nice human, not like whoever had mistreated him before), but he warmed up to me and we became a team.

I don’t know when you were born, sweetie, but we’ve always made today, Oct. 9th, the day of your adoption, your official birthday. So Happy birthday, my Basil. You are 8 today. I am blessed for having you in my life. :)
